The Lumen Private Cloud is a full stack of hyper-converged infrastructure from HPE or Dell based on VMware Cloud Foundation™. It is delivered as fully managed services from our 60+ planned edge locations and over 2,200+ global data centres.
The Lumen Private Cloud includes SSD storage and a range of servers with 16-56 cores and 128GB to 1.5TB RAM. You can fully customise the infrastructure you need and the location you want it to run from to suit your specific requirements.

How does Lumen Private Cloud work?
Lumen Private Cloud services set up and manage private cloud infrastructure for you where you want it. You design and configure your VM density, security, scale and support model. You can choose where to deploy your private cloud — in a Lumen data centre, within AWS or in Microsoft Azure infrastructure.

What is private cloud computing in lay terms?
Private cloud computing is cloud infrastructure dedicated to the private use of a single organisation.
Cloud computing refers to several technology layers you can access via software mechanisms called APIs. The lowest level of abstraction is hardware, but there are layers on top like virtualisation software, operating system, application building software, networking and security layers that may all be managed independently of their users.
In private cloud computing, you have full control over all the layers, irrespective of what your teams access and work on. You design the complete infrastructure stack from the lowest layer upwards.
What is managed private cloud?
There are different ways of designing and deploying your private cloud. One is to build a data centre from the ground up by purchasing your own hardware, configuring it, installing virtualisation software and self-managing the APIs for your team to use. This time-consuming and expensive process requires a dedicated internal IT team with the right expertise.
Managed private cloud is a much more cost-effective and practical solution for organisations. A third party sets up and manages the private cloud for you while you retain control over all your hardware and software. The managed cloud provider brings years of private cloud configuration experience and knowledge your IT team may not have. This means your IT team can focus on business functions, leaving day-to-day cloud administration tasks to the provider.
What is the difference between private and public cloud?
In the public cloud, you access services at a particular abstraction layer with limited control over how the lower layers are managed. Resource allocation is invisible, and the underlying hardware and other infrastructure can be shared between multiple organisations.
There are several use cases where the lower layer abstraction does not matter and is, in fact, critical for project success. For example, if you are building machine learning models on AWS SageMaker, you want to focus on model design without worrying about the underlying environment. You can be assured it’s the best possible optimisation for running ML algorithms.
However, there are other use cases where you want greater control over the lower layers. In modern IT infrastructure, you have a lot more choices available. You can purchase the infrastructure, deploy it privately in the public cloud, or access resources managed by other third parties. Private cloud gives you security, customisation and control of all layers while remaining flexible and scalable like the public cloud.
